Install Google Earth on Linux

I am gradually moving all my pc to Xubuntu or Mint Mate. I have found on Internet several different procedures to install Google Earth, this is the simplest which works for me.

install the dependencies:

sudo apt-get install lsb-core ia32-libs libfreeimage3 libqtcore4 libgl1-mesa-glx

then install the Google package:

sudo apt-get install googleearth-package

For 64bit architecture:

sudo make-googleearth-package --force

For 32bit architecture:

sudo make-googleearth-package

Install the package just built now, begin typing the command and hit the tab key to automatically complete the command.

sudo dpkg -i googleearth<HIT THE TAB KEY>

If you try to launch Google Earth now, Applications => Internet => Google Earth, you probably get something like this:

Install the correct fonts

sudo apt-get install ttf-dejavu ttf-bitstream-vera ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Despite the fonts cache is upgraded after the installation, Google Earth still uses the wrong fonts, so logout and login again.

Install Google Earth on Xubuntu 11.10 (deprecated)

I am gradually moving all my PCs to Xubuntu 11.10. I have found on Internet several different procedures to install Google Earth, this is the simplest which works for me. Should work on Ubuntu as well.

Download and register the apt-key

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -

Update the repository list

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google.list'

Update and install the package

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install google-earth-stable

If you try to launch Google Earth now, Applications => Internet => Google Earth, you probably get something like this:

We have only to install the correct fonts

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Despite the fonts cache is upgraded after the installation, Google Earth still uses the wrong fonts, so logout and login again.
