Google Maps: workaround to avoid the offset error for China map

When you start using Google Maps for China, you will soon understand that it is practically useless. Addresses and places shown are affected by an offset error in their positions. My friend in China, in fact, used Baidu maps instead.

To avoid this problem just use this specific Google Maps for China only: http://ditu.google.com

Install Google Earth on Xubuntu 11.10 (deprecated)

I am gradually moving all my PCs to Xubuntu 11.10. I have found on Internet several different procedures to install Google Earth, this is the simplest which works for me. Should work on Ubuntu as well.

Download and register the apt-key

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -

Update the repository list

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/earth/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google.list'

Update and install the package

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install google-earth-stable

If you try to launch Google Earth now, Applications => Internet => Google Earth, you probably get something like this:

We have only to install the correct fonts

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Despite the fonts cache is upgraded after the installation, Google Earth still uses the wrong fonts, so logout and login again.

Add Google repository to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick

I had to install some Google applications, hence why I had to add its repository.

$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

and add

deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free

Import the public key

$ wget -q https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
$ sudo apt-key add linux_signing_key.pub

Update the cache and your are ready to install your Google applications

$ sudo apt-get update
